Commercial manufacturers have a device that fits on the dog's collar that emits an electronic reminder to stop the barking. It is safe and humane, but is effective.

My dog barks all the time also. Previously we have used a barking Collar and it had worked very well, by since it is such a harsh lesson, many think it to be quite cruel. It isn't my opinion. Barking collars are designed not to hurt the dog, but to help the owner.
There are other methods aside from spending money to solve your problems.
A squirt bottle will usually do the trick :-) Worked for us!

I assume that you will resolve this issue promptly after my aide. Now the problem I have is teaching my dog what "Speak!" means..

Watch "The Dog Whisperer" on the Geo cgannel. Caesar (the Dog Whisperer) ha many many insights into doggie behavior and methods of discipline. I don't have dogs - only cats - but even I benefit from this amazing man! Watch his a few times and you will be able to figure out yourself what the appropriate approach should be in making your barking dog calm down a bit.

Take him to your vet and ask whether the dog has some sort of anxiety disorder. They might be able to use meds if he's hyper. Also see a professional dog trainer/psychologist, they are kind of expensive but they work miracles really. If all else fails you can get an anti-barking collar that spritzes an unpleasant smell over your dog's nose (harmless) each time it barks. Although I think this last resort might actually make the dog more crazy.

You don't have to hit him, but if you don't discipline him, you'll never get him to stop. You need to poke or pinch at him (not hard) when he starts barking to get his attention on you, then praise him when he's quiet. Keep this up until he learns to be calm (and yes, they can learn that).
By the way... dogs can bark with a muzzle on.

Buy a spray bottle and keep it filled at all times. Every time, EVERY time, your dog barks, spray it with water. It'll only take about a week or maybe two. Theres nothing indogane about water.

Teach him not to bark, reward him when he isn't barking. Don't yell at him, don't encourage barking at all, don't give him attention when he is out of control, only when he is calm and quiet.
