The more frequently you take him in the car, the calmer he should start to be.
Start just getting in the car and riding around. Just go and go until he stops crying, and then go home. It may take him quite a while, so you must do this only when you have time. Either that, or just take him with you when you have a lot of places to go. Have someone just hold him in the front seat. Have that person wait in the car while the “errand person” goes in and out of places. This way, you won’t need to set aside a special time to do this; it will happen during normal errands. Do it again a few days from the first time. Just ride around, don’t even take him anywhere. This may take several tries.
It takes major patience. Some dogs take longer than others. Good luck.

My dog acts like a nervous wreck in the car also. I adopted her at 9 Mos so I dont know why she might be so quirky. I use a kennel in the back of my car and put her in it whenever we have to go someplace. She seems also happier in there and more secure. You might try that along with some kind of treat to keep your dog occupied.

Every time you go into a car give him or her a treat soon he will get use to it and he or she will be happy and look forward to the car slowly after he or she gets used to getting a treat stop giving it to him or her but every time he she will think he will get a treat and will not cry

my dog SCREAMS when we get in the car. It is not because he hates car rides, in fact he loves car rides. It's just that he thinks he should be up front instead of in his carrier but a carrier is the safest way for him to travel so in he goes. I have an anti-bark collar for him that works well

If you take him for frequent car rides he won't get nervous in the car.
