I now have a white refrigerator and would like to change the color but do not wish to purchase a new one as it is only 1 year old. Are there "skins" to cover the orginal exterior available or is painting the only option?

If you are able to do this....ask around at auto body shops that spray paint cars...they can do a real pro job..Also, lots of colors to chose from...Stoves, fridge, cabinets, dishwasher.
Good Luck!

I have seen some mail order catalogues with skins for appliances. Stainless steel look alike. It's peel & stick. For fridges, dishwasher fronts & stoves. Quite expensive, but not as much as buying new. Try the maker of the fridge you have, they should have skins for your model. I believe the catalogue was brylane.com. Otherwise, I have spray painted fridges before & it's looked descent. Use an appliance spray paint for best results.
