The mormon church is an offshoot of christianity although most christians would reject them as heretics.
The believe the book of mormon is a new revelation which adds to the bible. A new new testament, if you will. Their mythology adds an American flavor to the Mid-Eastern mythology of the bible.
Being and not being mormon is the same as being and not being any religion. If you want to be, you go and sign up. You learn about the faith and are eventually accepted as a full member.
The only thing different about being and not being from a mormon perspective is that it is possible for members to have their dead ancestors baptized mormon. This gets around the christian problem of non-believing loved ones burning in hell.
All in all, their beliefs are no weirder or saner than christians, just different in some respects.

Joseph Smith had replied to an article in a local newspaper of him when they questioned what Mormon meant. Despite the editor's whimsical guesses, Joseph Smith wrote them saying, "Mormon literally means 'more good.'"
The man Mormon was a prophet of God, born around 310 B.C. and had been chosen as a general of the Nephite army at the age of 15. Sometime between 385 B.C. and 420 B.C. the opposition forces, called the Lamanites, killed Mormon and hundreds of thousands of soldiers under his command.
Only 24 survived this horrendous battle, one of whom was Mormon's son Moroni. It was this Moroni who had subsequently taken the gold plates and hid them up into the Hill Cumorah in upstate New York. In 1827, this same Moroni, then a resurrected being, showed Joseph Smith the exact location of those gold plates.
For more information, read the Book of Mormon.
Being called Mormons is not taken as an offence to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When once given as a mean-spirited nickname, it now stands as an abbreviated form of a member of the LDS Church.

Mormon is a term used to refer to adherents of the Latter Day Saint movement (also referred to as Mormonism), and most commonly to the movement's original and largest group, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.[1][2] According to church history, the term is derived from the Book of Mormon, a religious text that Joseph Smith, Jr. translated from ancient plates containing a history of the early inhabitants of the Americas that was compiled by a prophet called Mormon.[3] Mormons describe themselves as Christians.
