I thinking about getting a Sheltie and I want to know a bit more about them. How are they good toward strangers and children? Do they require a lot of gromming?

I have two Shelties. They are both wonderful around children. They do require brushing once a week. But, they are one of the smartest dogs and are easy to train.

I would recommend a Sheltie to anyone looking for a dog as a pet.

Shelties are nice dogs - the ones I've known were not hyper. However, some can be quite shy and would have a hard time in a noisy, disruptive household. They are small, gentle dogs and would have a hard time with a rough toddler but should do fine with gentle older kids. They have very long hair and do require a lot of grooming.

shelties are extremely smart dogs, therefore they have to be kept busy (great for agility and obedience!) or else they will bark, yelp, nip, dig, chew, escape etc.!
but if you have the time to dedicate to your dog and it's training and exercise, they are wonderful! generally friendly, although they do make good watch dogs (not the same as guard dogs!) really smart and funny! they are loyal and usually pretty practical (not too fussy, not extremely hyper, not hard-headed etc.)

they are ok with strangers, but don't expect them to be friendly right away. the thing with kids is that shelties are herding dogs and some do tend to herd kids ;-)
i wouldn't say they are the perfect dog for small children, but if the dog gets the exercise and mental activity it needs and it is trained and raised around children, it really shouldn't be a problem! make sure you get a sheltie from a good breeder, not some backyard breeder if you don't go for a shelter-sheltie, which is in my opinion a better idea seen as there are sooo many looking for a loving home :-)

shelties are a very good family dog great with kids and are usually good with strangers. they do require a fair amount of grooming but the rewards of a well groomed dog out weigh the task of grooming , they are a very good looking dog when they are well groomed. if you decide to get one in my estemation the best dog there is and you will also have a best friend as well ,i did

My friend has one, they are great family pets, but can be a bit reserved to strangers. They're pretty small, but they have a lot of fur (exactly like a Rough Collie's), so yes, they do require a bit of grooming.

my friend has one and yes they require a lot of grooming! LONG HAIR! My friend said his dog is a guard dog and will bark at anyone who comes near the house. That is all I know as I do not own one. I hope somebody else knows more.

I had one, Bangie was the best dog ever, didn't bark, good with kids, and smart. Like any animal needs to be groomed but didn't shed. Go for one.
