do people spend so much time arguing over him?
Woudn't you just think "stupid christians, wasting their life seeking someone that doesn't exist?"
And leave them be?
Why is it so important to prove otherwise?

Zachi had a point. I should have said "If you believe that God doesnt really exist..."
Thanks

We do it because the Christians we're opposed to (not all of them by any means) are actually dangerous.

It's unpleasant but it has to done.

As an Atheist, you must really feel comfortable with the idea that you will become non-existent when you finally die. No memories....no feelings....no concept of time....nothing. Do you actually believe in this and truly are happy with this belief?
While I agree that religious arguments are ridiculous, that does'nt mean there is'nt a God. The nature of people is to have the desire to know that there is something more than just living and die and becoming nothing. This not only brings comfort for the end, but gives people hope that death is not the end of everything. For thousands of years, people have come up with many ideas on what happens after death, thus religions are born and practiced and preached.
There has to be something more to just living and dying. Otherwise, what's the point of staying alive, and in misery for many. What's the point of morals? They just get in the way of achieving any desire we may harbor. Why keep those disadvantaged alive....the blind, the deaf, the starving, etc.? Why not just put them out of their miseries? In fact, why not just waste the whole planet? This way, there is no more misery for many. Would the universe miss this speck of dirt and water?
Think you can answer these questions and not feel guilty? You have to be a machine not to a least feel there has to be a little more than this.

I have no problem with christians who leave the rest of us be.

If a christian tries to ask a question about faith, I feel that I might be able to enlighten him to a broader perspective. This is especially the case where the question deals with prejudice either against others or against the person asking the question.

I also have a problem with christians who feel the need to enact their faith.

As one example of the latter, why do christians argue about allowing gays to marry? Why don't they just say "stupid gays, thinking they're married even though god won't recognize it" and leave them be?

Why let people go around being ignorant? My purpose here is to help someone realize the truth. Or perhaps to learn of some evidence I've overlooked. So far, I haven't seen anything convincing that there is a god - or ever was.

Because they use their faith to impose on other people through education, holy war (even though there is nothing holy about war), and laws. If there were no Christians, or any other religion for that matter, we would be a much more advanced smarter healthier society.

People are arguing over who's going to win the World Series already and spring training is not even over. People argue about everything. People are disputive and argumentative.

I don't try to prove otherwise. Honestly, I think it's better for people to have different beliefs than mine. What fun would it be to debate with another atheist?

However, I don't want people trying to shove inspirational pamphlets down my throat.

"If God really doesn't exist,..." - the first clause of your question is the problem. No one know if God exists- that is what belief is all about. And then we get into intolerance and other horrible things.

I leave them be until they decide not to leave me be. Then, basically, the gloves are off. Try to convert me, and I will take your scripture, disect it, show you the inconsistencies/ errors in it, put it back together, and give it back to you.
