The wedding ring is gold because gold was seen then (and still is to an extent, it's still preferred by many people over platinum) as the most precious material, and because it's durable and lasts a long time (hopefully qualities a marriage should have).

The ring is a band, a circle around the finger which is neverending, hopefully like the marriage (unless one of you dies, obviously).

The ring finger is there because it is believed that there is a vein that runs directly to the heart from the third finger of the left hand (your 'ring' finger).

Gold is precious, durable, and long lasting. The ring is a circle, the symbol of eternity, which hopefully a marriage is.

If I had to guess the reason that gold was chosen, it would be because it is a "precious" metal.
