i have short hair, and i was wondering if i should use stuff like hair wax and other styling products before or after i use a straightener or curling iron...

If you get a hair straightener that is ceramic instead of metal, then you wouldn't need anything in your hair before you straighten. I love my straightener, its ceramic and works great without anything in my hair.
