My school is having this Italian fest thing and because I take Italian I have to attend or loose 300 points. I was planning on going but my teacher said she would choose people to dance an Italian dance in the middle of the room in front of like 300 people and I got sick at the thought. She announced today that I would be one of the dancers and I wanted to cry! (pathetic?) I tried to tell her without crying that I couldn't dance, dress up (believe me I REALLY CANNOT dress up), and dance BAREFOOT and she just said 'yes you can we'll practice' as if all i cared about was how i danced. I don't know what to tell her! I can't express how much I don't want to do this. if she doesn't let me go, i'm just going to fake sick or an injury because i really can't do this. WHAT SHOULD I TELL HER? please help me!!!
thank you!

Maybe you should try it. If you are taking Italian you are obviously interested in the subject to a certain extent. Learing more about a culture can look excellent on college apps.

Sorry, but you are setting yourself up for a lifetime of failure. Your teacher is right -- you can do it, and you should, for your own sake. But the important point to remember here is that this is not all about you. People will be watching all the dancers and many of them will be watching one special dancer (a son or daughter) and won't even be glancing your way.
Folk dances are fun. They aren't complicated, they are just simple dances that people have done for generations. They certainly add a great deal to any cultural event, and your Italian fest sounds like a lot of fun.
Look at it another way. If you can put up with three minutes (that's only 180 seconds) of dancing with a group of friends, you will have all the rest of the evening to enjoy the fest.
Get out there and do it, and then come back and tell us how surprised you were when you actually enjoyed it.

PS: Stage fright is not terminal, and many, many celebs are affected by it. Sounds goofy, but it's true.

I'd be honest. You can tell her that you have really bad stage fright. Explain to her that you literally feel sick to your stomach, and that it's not the dancing that scares you, it's the being in front of people.

The teacher may just be wanting to push you into pushing yourself, but rather than take a zero, I'd talk to her first. If that doesn't work, talk to your parents and have them ask to arrange for an alternate assignment. Parents can wield a lot more pressure on a teacher than a student.

This is easy.

Dancing is just walking around (in this situation). If you can put one foot in front of the other, that's good enough.

Costume: Just a nice short-sleeved blouse, some kind of skirt (as full as possible) that is below the knees, shorts underneath and socks and flat shoes. Bring extra socks and shoes.

You're not going to be a pro after 10 minutes of instruction and that's all you're going to get anyway.

Talk to the guidance counselor. Explain your situation and that you'd be more than happy to do any equal assignment.

offer something else you could do instead of dancing so that she just doesn't think you're trying to flake on the whole thing
