I just went to the previously-mentioned Soft Paws website, and looked all through it. I am impressed enough to order a set of Soft Paws for my Bowie, very willing to give this a try! Thanks for asking your question and giving me insight to what appears to be the best alternative imagineable!

Well there are a couple of answers to your problem.
First let me try to explain something to you...if you declaw just the front paws of a cat they can still defend themselves if attacked if they get out. But i do understand that you may not want to do this.
Softpaws or anything else that fits over the claws of a cat work, though they can get expensive after having to buy them usually every month or two. They dont last forever so dont think you can buy them just once and have them last until the cat dies. Cause that wont happen. I believe they are made of a plastic/rubber material...they wont hurt the cat they can do everything like they use to...the only thing is getting them on the cat.
The easier least expensive way is to calmly take your cat wrap them up in a towel so you can have better control over the cat and clip its nails using a pet nail clipper not a human one. This will help them keep the claw damage to a min. Otherwise get your cat a scratching post and spread catnip on it, this will give your cat a device to take its clawing out on.

BRAVO for not declawing your cats a.k.a "chopping their toes off"!!!
I love soft paws! I have 5 cats and can never tell who’s been the naughty one scratching the sofa beam, so I put different colors on each of the kitty, and BINGO, found the culprit :) For the first application, you may want to spend some money to have a "veterinary savvy" individual show you the correct technique to apply, it will seems like an impossible chore but once you gets used to it, it's a breeze. I can apply soft paw on all 10 toes in 5 minutes or so. Oh, for a starter, do not attempt to put soft paws on all 4 limbs and the clear ones are the best for starters. They cost approximately $20 (try eBay) for a packet of 40, so if you only applying to the front paws, it will take you four applications. Don't expect the soft paws to stay for up to 60 or 90 days for the very first application, it's something new and so JJ will intentionally chewed it off, don't be surprise if they are all half gone by next morning - they are made of materials safe even if swallowed. Once they get used to it, you will be replacing each toe as they fall off, mine last about 6 weeks in between re-application, they stayed indoor only though. I'm sure outdoor cats will wear theirs off much faster.
Lastly, do not follow the instruction of clipping the nails just above the quick (how do you spell that?) before application. Only trim the sharp tip of the nails off, the reason for this is the glue needs a surface to adhesive to, if you trim the nails too short, the bond is not there and won't last. One more tip, get your cat used to you massages (manipulating) the toes before first application and in between, it will make your day brighter :) Oh and they work!

I want to say that I have never used the soft paws, but my friends have and they say they work great. But I do want to say about declawing, my male cat was neutered and declawed and he was an outside cat and he had no trouble defending himself he could climb a tree he could do anything he wanted to do. I honestly believe its a personal choice. If you have the money you can do the soft paws because it does get expensive. They cost around $23-30, every 4-6 wks and Ive been told most cats dont mind them being put on. Again, its all up to you. Good luck and let me know.. I just might try them on my new cats.

Soft Paws are safe for cats... if they go outside, they probably will not be able to climb up trees or fences or stuff. If you do let a cat out who has soft claws on, it should only be in a fenced in yard or where you are absolutely sure the cat will be safe. My cats have their full compliment of claws but I let them out only when I can be with them.
The first tme you get the cat to wear soft claws, it would be best if you let a vet or vet technician put them on for you (you can watch so you'll know how to do it yourself next time). The soft claws stay on for up to 6 months depending on how active your kitty is.
Good on you for not considering declawing... that method is really monstrous. Many vets now refuse to do the operation and it is illegal in many countries.

Soft paws do not hurt, but they can be difficult for some cats to get used to. I wouldn't recommend them going outside with them as they will not be able to effectively defend themselves with blunt nails. They are made out of vinyl and are held on with a non-toxic glue. The glue will last for several weeks, and they need to be replaced as the nail grows. They are VERY difficult to remove if the glue is intact.

hii..i have three cats of my own lol so i can help you out.
soft paws, or claw caps dont hurt the kitty at all. they'll be curious about them at first, but they will eventually forget they are even wearing them lol.
its kind of cool because they come in different colors, like red, blue, and green. but also white if you dont want colored caps. they last 2-3 months, and cost about 30$ for a set of front paws.
its not reccomended that you let them outside if they have the claw caps on, because they will have lost their main source of defense. if another kitty challenged your cat -- your cat would be in a little bit of trouble.
but ---- harmless and effective! good luck :)

I wouldn't if I were you. There is such a thing as getting scratching posts with catnip. They cannot defend themselves if need be. You doi know you can clip the claws without declawing, right?

I put them on my beloved PennyPoo (Himy) while my daughter held her. She growled like she would never forgive me and it hurt my heart. When we were done, my daughter let her go and she shook it off like nothing ever happened. She had to adjust to falling off the sofa when she jumped and couldn't grip, which i hated anyway). So no, afterwords I don't think it hurt her, just the control pissed her off.
No they can't go outside, you wouldn't put a declawed kitty outside.
Made out of a tough plastic. My daughters cat chewed his off pretty constantly. When he would get one off, she would glue another one on and he would let her.
Bought at PetSmart for about $30, 2 or 3 complete sets in small, med, large.
