According to Tibon, Gutierrez, Diccionario Etimológico Comparado de los Apellidos Españoles, Hispano-Americanos, y Filipinos, editorial Diana, Mexico, 1988, p 16, the name Anchondo is Basque in origin. Vasco: aintzi: “aguazal” “cenegal” (marsh, fen y ondo: “lado,” “cerca.” In other words, “cerca del aguazal” or “near the marsh.” The original Basque spelling Aintziondo/Anziondo and is found in Guipuzcoa. The Spanish form was Ainciondo. The name can also be spelled: Anciondo/Anziondo and, of course, Anchondo.
