Walking in areas that have been treated for snow or ice. There is a cream you can get to condition his paws. Several brands are available in most pet departments. If you can't find anything, try vaseline.

With natural wear and tear, just like humans, dogs paw pads (feet) can get dry and cracked. Sounds like your dog needs a "pawdicure" with some special cream. I strongly recommend protecta-pad by Tomlyn. I just did both of my dogs feet last night. I like it because it soaks in fast so the can't try and lick it off,and they seem to enjoy the foot massage! I posted a link with info. and a pic below. You can find it at most pet stores. I hope I was able to help! :)

The same things that make humans feet dry. Human feet get dry in the summer from wearing sandals or going barefoot so imagine how a dogs feet get dry. If you get snow, the snow and ice and yuck don't help either. Normally dogs have no issues even if we think the pads are dry. They are much stronger then human skin and can tolerate a lot. If they bleed or split in big gashes please call the vet!

Walking on cold cement. There are products made for dogs' paws that help with that. My dogs paws crack in the winter, and we put boots on him (and he's a big tough lab).

Being really active. There isn't a real cure for this. Maybe you should ask the vet for some doggie lotion:)
