Camping, fishing, swimming (in lakes and rivers), anything in the "real" outdoors. I grew up doing these things and I had a great childhood. Camping is great because it gets them away from the TV and Xbox and into the woods. Children love to explore if you give them the opportunity. I grew up doing these as well as riding ATVs and shooting guns, but I don't recommend exposing your children to those without being experianced yourself (and of course only when they are old enough). If they're over 10 years old, take them horseback riding. All these things are relatively cheap and great experiances for children. Outdoor recreation is something that every child should be exposed too... they will probably grow up to be much more well rounded and happy.

Take a closer look at the world around you. There are plenty of really fun free things you can do with kids. Go insect collecting! Most kids get so excited about this one. You first have the hunt for a bug and then get to have a great time studying it (bring a magnifying glass and a clear plastic container to momentarily house your new bug. Observe your bug, ask questions, find answers, and turn that sucker loose!

You can also go creek walking and overturn rocks and find crayfish/insects there as well. You can go salamandering (look under rocks and logs). Hike around, play in the dirt, etc.
