Do you have any expiriences?

I'm being treated for depression (zoloft) and I was told to examine my thyroid gland since it's function has some effects on our mental state, i.e. can cause depression, or cause fast paced heart rate (which is common in panick atacks I guess..)...

Tomorrow I'm going to take the tests, and discuss them with my therapist probably the next week. So I'd like some feedback... I know those two are connected since thyroid is a gland and it's hormons effect us in many ways, but I'd like to know some more specific information. What were your symptoms before you took the tests, what did you do if your tests for thyroid disfunction were positive, did the therapy improve your state etc...

Tnx!

Before I was put on Prozac, my doctor made me take the same tests that you are going through. I am a very curious person, and she knows that about me. I wanted to know why I needed them. She explained that thyroid gland disorders are very common in women. The imbalance will cause your body to not respond the same way to antidepressents. The hormonal imbalance will change the way they medicate you. I am on the low side of normal, but I am normal. I am tired sometimes, and I do gain weigh easily and have a hard time losing it. I am not on meds for that at all, but my prozac works just fine. If you need to be put on thyroid meds, it's really no big deal. I have a friend with hypothyriodism and depression. She's simply on two courses of meds. She's doing great!

Depression is a symptom of an underactve thyroid. I know many who had this symptom of hypothyroidism. It did not go away until they got treated with a thyroid medication containing both T4 and T3. Quite often hypothyroidism is treated with T4 and the person still suffers from depression and gets put on an antidepressant too, where had they of just been treated with Armour perhaps that would have been all they need.

If you test your thyroid, make sure the test is done first thing in the morning. If its done in the afternoon, it may delay a diagnosis.

I have both depression and an underactive thyroid and they were diagnosed right around the same time. When my lack of energy and depressed state did not improve when my thyroid became regulated with medication, the doctor then realized I had depression too. I am now on meds for both and feeling wonderfully.

If something is wrong with your thyroid, it can cause depression like symptoms. Yes, if your thyroid is not functioning correctly, you will feel better emotionally as soon as your thyroid is working correctly. Did anyone suggest testing your hormones also? That can also be a problem.

I have hypothyroidism and take medication for it. I have noticed that I am a lot more edgy and lose my, already short, temper easier. Yeah I think it has a lot to do with it. I was a bit high strung before but now, taking the meds, I am even more so when actually I am in a better place in my life. I am going to keep an eye on this question beacause I have noticed a difference. Good luck!!

I have been on several meds over the past few years but when I went on lithium I felt great for a time and then boom, I couldn't talk, finish a sentence, read, write, walk etc. Anyway it was hypothyroism and it goes along with lithium-course I am also going thru menopause due to chemotherapy so it could be anything. If you do have a problem with it keep up with the blood work, it is very difficult to keep level.

when I found out I had thyroid dysfunction I had gained weight, could sleep 16 hrs. at a time, my skin was dry, & my hair was falling out. I wasn't necessarily that depressed, but I didn't have any energy & just wanted to sleep all the time.
