A true Christian is the same as the "true Scotsman" - the true Christian is the tool of the "no true Scotsman" fallacy, i.e.: no true Christian would...in that sense, it is used as a persuasive method, to promote conformity.

Alternately, a "true Christian" is what Christians declare themselves to be when scrambling to distance themselves from horrendous behavior on the part of their brethren.

I feel like the ones who constantly proclaim how Christian they are and look down upon others for not agreeing with them are the least Christian of all. I've heard so-called "Christians" say that they would punch a guy in the face just for being gay. I know another who disowned her cousin because she was a lesbian. For me, Christianity was founded on love and not hate.

I associate a TRUE Christians with kindness, understanding, and empathy. They don't feel the need to push their beliefs on others and they don't get bent out of shape if you happen to disagree with them.

The Bible says that those who worship God "must worship in spirit and in truth". (John 4:24)

Joshua said we should serve the Lord "in sincerity and in truth". (Joshua 24:14)

A true Christian, a true follower of God, is one who follows His word. Jesus has "all authority" (Matthew 28:18-20). We should not replace this authority by following the authority and doctrine (teaching) of men!
