They have contibuted to taxes and the nations wealth
in their old age why does our country not look after them a little instead of whinging they are now living too long and make them sell their homes.
If they had not contributed a penny and abused the system all their lives they get everything free I am asking is this right in anyones eyes ?

prince i don`t know how old you are but these people have looked after their selves all their lives some people just work to live but if they have payed in they should get something in return if they need instead of having everything they have worked for taken off them.Maybe when your a little older you`ll get a little wiser about these things hopefully

I totally agree with you. It's the same people who have to pay for everything, right up to the very end. I think if someone works for years, gathering together a legacy to leave their family, they should not be penalised for that. Care should be provided for them - as you say, they have paid into the system all their lives.
I have seen many elderly people depriving themselves of basic care because they wanted to have something to give their families after they died. The catch 22 of course, is that because they have house or land, they don't get the care provided.
Just another example of the huge injustices in the world. Makes me wonder why I don't become a raging alcoholic, do drugs and bum around on the couch all day, and have everything paid for. I'd probably be better off in the long run - my kids would have grants for college, if I were in a council house, my repairs would be done for me, I'd have some pocket money for doing nothing, and my retirement would be taken care of - I could just book into a long stay unit somewhere!
Ooh, you've started me off now!

Tell me about it. I worked from age 15 until I had to stop working due to ill health. I had one child and therefore did not qualify for family allowance - although with one child that is where all the expense is. Politicians finally agreed to pay F.A. just before my child left school - therefore, I didn't get the benefit for long. Being a married woman & was entitled to go onto the lower rate stamp, but I realised that as my hubby & I were only 4months apart in age. I would have to wait until he was 65 to get a pension. I therefore decided to voluntarily pay the full stamp, to enable me to retire at 60, which was the norm then. This was in the early 70's. I was told by the National Insurance department at that time, that if I paid a minimum of 20 years at full rate, I would be entitled to a full pension in my own right. I kept that letter safely. Of course by the time this government came to power - all the goal posts were moved. I was told that because I was 4 years short of their new requirements, I would get a reduced pension - despite paying almost 40 years at full rate. So my pension is now reduced by £9 per week. OK, It doesn't sound a lot, but £9 is the difference of me eating properly or living on cheap Tesco food - which is an insult to the not so well off in our society. Of course I appealed - Sent all my paperwork spanning all the years to a tribunal, including the letter telling me I should only have to contribute 20 years @ the full rate. Never heard another peep from them - my precious appeal was lost in the post? So after grafting vertually all my life, my teeth are going rotten - if I could find a dentist - even National Health - I can't afford to pay for treatment. I sit here with a pair of glasses, literally taped up with gaffer tape! Yep, I can't afford new glasses, I'm dreading the day they finally give up the ghost! Never got handouts, I was always working to keep my pride. But when you see how these sponging immigrants are bleeding our country dry, I do get angry & really have got to the stage when I think dropping off my perch will be the best action. The Labour Government are the biggest Crooks of all time. Thanks for nothing Gordon & B lair........The poster asked is this right in anyones eyes? Well, obviously - not mine. Oh! & BTW, my Grandfather won the DCM during the 1st WW & my Dad was a paratrooper in the last war - they fought for our freedom & a better place for us....Ironic or what.

No it is not right at all. My mate works in a local advice centre and often tells tales of old people who have made every effort to save and find them selves a few pence over the governments limits and lose all help ( worth hundreds of pounds a year). Others have lived it up, holidays etc, and get council flat, council tax paid, extra pension, eye care etc.
Who in there right mind - with the exception of the very wealthy can see any point in saving?

Your right, why do they do that ? i guess its because your only of use to them when your working and paying taxes, so once you've retired then you become a liability to them, so they would prefer you to die. Lets face it the government has no compaction for the citizens of this country you can see it on the news every day, even our soldiers are treated like a liability when they return from serving in Afghanistan or Iraq, they get no help to rehabilitate.
But if our government can do anything for immigrants,Asylum seeker or find money for any oversea project then no problem. Has the governments of this country forgot the first rule of family life " charity Begin's at home"

It's a load of crap. My mum and dad worked all their lives and their neighbours didn't. Now that my mum and the woman next door are both widowed the life long scrounging neighbour has her rent reduced to buttons and pays no council tax (not to mention many other things like eye care for example). My mum has to pay for it all!!! And therefore has far less disposeable income for working hard her whole life than the lazy old crone with a glass back!

I totally agree with you. I watch in horror as we disrespect the elderly. I know it can be boring as some speak about the war years etc. but what they say say is true without their sacrifices our country would not be what it is today. The government is as bad, the pension is given grudgingly and at a level where some have to choose between food or heat.
Its is time to respect our elders and give them their due.

I agre wholeheartedly I think you will find that our OAP's are some of the worst off in the EEC. I think you will find that the OAP's in the Rep of Ireland, are better off not having this that and the other to pay for in their retirement. No phone bills to pay etc.

No it's not.
My idea would be to have a reducing tax.
For every 9750 hours of work - approx 5 years at 37.5 hours a week, you should lose 1% of your income tax.
Likewise, every 5 years on benefit (when fit for work) should lose 1% of your benefit allowance.
Thus encouraging people to work for longer, to become better off in the long run.
