It depends. If you're looking for one with the best atmosphere, check out their webpage and see how many runners ran last year & if they have pictures. You can gain a lot of insight from the amount of entrants & the post-race party pics.

If you're looking to get a PR (best time), look at their site and see if they have an elevation map and the time of day the race is run. Early morning and evening runs can be a lot cooler and you'll get a better race time the closer the temps are to 50F.

Hope this helps. There's a 5k training plan below and some tips. Best of luck!

Runner's World posts a list of the best races in America every year so I would take a look and see what they have to say about races in/near your town.

Try to find races with good feedback, ask people at your gym or local running store or chose a race with a "cause" if that's your thing. I pick my races based on previous experience and feedback from other runners and then I am able to develop an opinion on them for other people. Everyone has a "favorite" race and who knows, it could be the same as yours!

Races with Runners Expos are always good places to meet people. Also, races with large after-parties will expose you to lots of other runners and events.

Good luck!

Why not do more than one? As long as they're not on the same day you don't need to choose one over the other, if you don't want to.

I've heard that it takes your body one day per mile raced for recovery. At those distances, as long as you didn't go hog wild with racing fury, you should be good to run a good number. And another thing that's great about these races is that they are very reasonably priced, so even running a few probably wouldn't break the bank.

On another note, races around holidays tend to be a blast. Turkey Trots or Shamrock Shuffles. People usually go to these races for fun and frivolity.

I tend to do several small races (under 200 entrants) and a couple larger events every year. Keep in mind that when you're starting a large race, unless you start up front, it takes up to 30 seconds or so to make it to the start line, in the meantime, the clock is running. Smaller races are best for running good times and larger races are usually best for atmosphere, giveaways and such. I have stuck with a certain promoter in my area - So. California - who I know puts on good races and I see many of the same nice people every time. Throw in some larger events and it rounds out my running season.

Check out active.com for races near you. If you live in California go to www.runnersimage.com.
