Right off the bat, I think it's chemical - different people elicit different emotional responses. It's involuntary.

Long term, it has more to do with yourself than the other person and it's definitely something you have more control over. Our environment and experiences determine the roles we allow others to play in our lives.

It has to do with having a conversation with somebody. Some people can tell right away who they will get along with and who they won't get along with.
