get a 'normal' shih tzu from a reputable breeder who has ALL their stock health checked clear for hereditary diseases, makes sure that they are of good pedigree and registers them with the KC! do not, however, go to a 'breeder' who says that they breed 'teacup/miniature' of whatever breed, because there is a good chance they will NOT have performed health checks, and they will have just bred one runty dog to another to get more runty, undersized and underweight puppies to sell at an inflated price, without thought and care to the resulting offsprings health and wellbeing.

The Kennel Club Breed Standard for the Shih Tzu calls for dogs that are not more than 27 cms at the withers. There is only one type of Shih Tzu, so presumably a “Tom Thumb” Shih Tzu is just a smaller type.
