My cat did this for a little bit and I couldn't figure it out either. I gave him a little nibble of my food(chicken) and he didn't eat it, come to find out my boyfriend had been giving him pieces of steak....he wanted steak again, I guess he thought that was what I was eating too anyway i found one way to get a cat to stop something without being mean-blow in his face-they hate it.

Bleive me, you don't want your kitty to get into the habit of begging at the dinner table. Table scraps are not good for cats (most people food have ingredients that cats cannot digest ro ingredients that make them fat); and a begging cat soon becomes a pest at dinner time. Feed your kitty twice a day and at dinner time, put her in a bedroom with some of her toys and close the door. After some weeks of this, the cat will quit bugging you at dinner. It is only when you give in to her that she will keep on doing that becuase you reward the behavior by giving her food!

Whatever he's trying to tell you, it ISN'T that he's hungry or that he's got a hankering to try human food.

If he's only crying when you all down for a meal, I'd say he's begging for attention. From his point of view, there you all are all in one place paying attention to food instead of the cat!

You may just have to suck it up and ignore him at mealtimes, or maybe shut him in another room. Eventually he'll get the idea that he's not supposed to disturb you while you're eating. (By the way, you need to do him the same courtesy and not bother him when he's eating.)

If he cries other than at mealtimes, he could be sick or he wants you to see something. If you walk toward him and he walks away but looks back at you, that means "follow me" and he wants to show you something. But it seems kind of odd that this would only happen at mealtimes, so I think begging for attention is more likely to be what's happening.

How old is your cat? If it is a kitten, it should be ignored at mealtimes, as feeding it extra table-scraps over and above its regular cat food, will add too much extra unhealthy weight. Check with the vet to see if your pet is eating the correct amount of the appropriate cat food. Try feeding the cat its evening meal before your dinner. Provide it with its own clean, private eating area, with a fresh supply of drinking water, refreshed daily, or a water fountain. The eating area must be quite separate from the litter box area, which should be cleaned daily. Cats are very clean animals. Try throwing a favourite toy for the cat to chase away from the table, or, if possible, shut it in another room when the family is eating. Prevent the cat from jumping up by placing a hand, palm side down, in front of the cat and saying firmly: "NO". This will train it not to jump on anything, when done at the location.. I cannot stand to see cats or any animals on kitchen work surfaces where human food is prepared. Hitting the cat to try to prevent it from doing something is cruel. The cat does not know why your are hitting it. Distracting its attention to other things, like toys and playtime, and firm commands do work. Over the years all our cats have been all kept healthy and safe as inside cats, with long playful years. Exercise and diet are important. When canned fish is being prepared in the kitchen our cat has always appeared, brushing against our legs and begging for a treat. If it has been salmon canned in water, it has been allowed to have a treat of a TINY amount of salmon and the water on a plate in its eating area. One cat went wild over only organic Boston lettuce, and it was allowed a tiny treat. Organic Cat wheat grass, grown in a plant pot, can be enjoyed by your cat as a daily treat. Our current long-haired cat likes a daily small dose of tuna flavoured Laxatone which is a tube of laxative and lubricant for hairball removal. It stops her spitting up hairballs! Most cats will go wild about some food or odour, like catnip or Hibiscus wood cat toys, as long as they have everything in moderation, and are trained not to beg for human food at the table, they are perfect pets. Those plaintive meeows and big pleading eyes are hard to ignore when you love your pet, but keep up the training and playtime and good luck with taking care of your cat with many happy years of love in return from a happy animal.
