Any of you tattooed freaks out there ever been accused of having a "cutting" problem? Someone once said to me that they felt anyone with numerous tatts has a cutting problem. Just wondered if any of my fellow inked friends have experienced this same narrow mindedness?

For those of you that dont know: I have 24 tattoos! No cutting problem here, just a serious addiction to good body art! And when the person said this to me, all I could do was laugh.

I did not mean to offend by using the term "tattoed freaks", it was actually an endearment.

I'm going to catch hades for this.. but I have tattoos.. and I have a problem with self-injury.I've been cutting for 27 years. I've stopped off and on.. so far.. 1 day short of 17 months this time. Most people didn't know cause I hid where I cut.. or cut where clothes would cover it. . Most people still don't know.. well til now. It was a way to survive.. and deal with overwhelming emotions, and to remind myself that I can feel, and that I'm alive.
The tattoos help. It's one reason I'm so careful about choosing designs, placement, everything. and if I relapse and cut.. I have to go a year before I can get another tattoo. That's a BIG incentive. And I won't cut anywhere I have tattoos.. as someone else said NOT ruining that kind of investment. (one reason I'm considering getting my legs covered and sleeves.. of something beautiful.. )
Sorry others have run into the stereotype.. but Cutting isn't as bad as people think.. nor are tattoos.. they're just outside the mainstream so get lumped together a lot

I never would have thought of this correlation and I'm suprised and never would have thought of that. I don't think that it would be classified as a "cutting prob" though....cutting generally stems from one trying to kind of punish themselves. It's a disorder in which one uses cutting to kind of release some of their mental pain if that makes sense or to punish themselves or inflict pain on themselves.
Re: tattooing...of course there's the obvious love of art but the addictive effect stems from the adrenaline rush and that's what the body is drawn to. That's partially why people get "addicted" to getting tattooed. It's the adrenaline rush that comes along with the tattoo.

I have been accused of it and I don't even have scars like that on my body (I have scars but they're from things like scrapes and burns and whatnot, not from a razor)! I had no idea why they brought it up and it didn't make sense to me. I've gotten other standard narrow minded comments such as people assuming I'm a drug abusers, alcoholic, whore, etc, but that was the weirdest.
Usually that behavior is something that needs professional attention and help. People of all sorts have been cutters, but you can't assume that people who like tattoos LOVE pain and LOVE to hurt themselves.
Cutting is harmful and disrespectful to your body in my opinion. Tattoos are a little different.

I dated a cutter once. He did it to feel the actual pain. Said it made him know he was alive...probably if he did less drugs he wouldnt feel so numb. I have cut myself (once on purpose when I was dating him) and cutting does not feel like tattoing. I dont know what he was looking for but they are NOT the same.
I like the feeling of getting a tattoo...it does not feel like a cut...more like a burn...like hot wax maybe...or a good rug burn...who doesnt like rug burn. Anyway...cutters are self mutilators...where as the inked folks are all about self expresion...not supressing and mutilating...but expression. Helloooooo no one is gonna cut up something they just paid $$ for.

I bought a paper cutter at Wal-Mart so I could cut out photos straight. Does that make me a cutter. I think the only people who keep saying things like we are cutters, going to hell, going to prison, have diseases, and all the other things like this have issues that they need help with and it makes them feel better if they can hide behind a computer and make stupid remarks about people with tattoos.

There is a connection between the two, whether you've realized it or not. You experience pleasure through pain. You have become addicted to the high you get from the pain of being tatooed. It's so pleasurable you probably don't even consider it pain.
The same is true with cutters. It doesn't hurt while they cut. It gives a euphoric, energized feeling that is highly addictive.

who ever said that is ignorant ....tattoo and cutting are too different things....Cutting is a physical release of overwhelming emotional stress. The pain releases endorphins that help soothe and clear the mind of built up anger and anxiety. It's hypothesized that it could be caused by chemical imbalances and depression that make them lust for the endorphin release. It may be due to sensory arousal. They feel more real and alive while cutting themselves......... i think that tattoos are like a piece of art you put on your body to remember something,or a place, a certain feeling..etc. But thats just me.the reasons are different for each person.

First of all, we are not freaks! It is rude to assume that someone who is expressing themselves is a freak. How closed minded are you?
Secondly, Cutters are people who need psychological help. It has nothing to do with tattoos or body piercing or anything. It is a form of attention seeking and should be dealt with professionally.
It amazes me at how ignorant people are about simple things.

Hmm, no. I need to cut the various vegetable & meat (or whatever) bits appropriately for my pan/stir fries. If the meat isn't defrosted enough it's tough to cut, and if it's too defrosted it's annoying & squishy. As long as I keep my knives fairly sharpened and don't have more than a glass of wine while prepping, it goes along merrily.
Some veggies (squash, cabbage, potatoes) are easier with a cleaver; does that count, or is it more 'chopping'?
