The Prophets of the Bible.

But we did not believe them.

It was not about religion....it is about relation(relationship with god)

God finally said, "my children will never make it on their own". That is why he sent his Son, Jesus Christ.

Interesting you know little about religion but you are a Christian haha. I guess I should have suspected that. Well there was Judaism which is what Jesus was taught as a child. Judaism is the religion of the Jews. And there was paganism which isn’t really a religion but a group of polytheistic and other older religions. Some that worshiped the sun or parts of nature and things like that. Then the Egyptians had a few different religions and are believed to be the creator of monotheism religion. Which basically means religion of one god. If you want to learn about Judaism read the Old Testament and that is what there religion is based off. It's a rather horrible book full of blood violence and a jealous god that loves killing and teaching people supposed lessons. Then Christ came along and made it alot better and about 100 years after his death the New Testament began to come to life. There were a few books that didn’t make it into the cut and these are called Gnostic scriptures. In North America we are not sure exactly what religion was being used during Christ or before as we were not here until a thousand and some year’s later haha. But the Native Americans had a paganism polytheistic believe. And they all differed depending on the tribe since they were not as civilized as other people. I hope all that helps you it’s about everything I know really.

Islam was created in the 7th century which was 700 years after Christs death.

Erm... You are aware that Jesus was Jewish, aren't you? So that's a big clue as to the main religion in that part of the Middle East before he was born.

In Europe, there were various polytheistic religions (you're probably familiar with Roman gods like Jupiter and Neptune, Greek ones like Zeus and Poseidon, or Norse ones like Thor and Odin).

Elsewhere in the world, there were religions that are still pretty big today: Hinduism in India, for example.

As for the Americas: well, there were various interesting beliefs (and still are) among native Americans, but I don't have space to describe them here. Wikipedia is a good source.

The Jesus story isn't better than the rest - most Muslims tend to prefer the Muhammad story, for example. What Jesus's teachings had in their favour was Paul, who made Jesus's teachings into a religion, and the conversion of a Roman emperor, which helped spread the new religion throughout Europe (and ultimately further).

There are other factors, but I won't go into them here.

Before -- and during, and after -- the time of Jesus, there have been many other religions besides Christianity and Judaism. Hinduism is one of the oldest, for example, and all parts of the world have had their own thriving religions at all times in history.

It demonstrates that the widespread nature of Christianity is a relatively recent phenomenon.

As for what religions there were before Jesus... the short answer is "lots and lots". Different areas of the world had different faith systems. You could spend a very long time researching them all, but here's a link to get you started:

At one time, Adam and Eve practiced true worship. They lost the opportunity for us all to have perfection (Rom. 5:12). After that, the Hebrew scriptures pointed toward and prophesied about a redeemer, Jesus, that would come as our Savior. When he did, Christianity was "born" and followers of Jesus were part of true worship. Those who did not, were part of false religion/worship.

Jesus gave his life as a propitiatory sacrifice for all those exercising faith in him (John 3:16). That's why his story is the greatest story ever told. He came from the heavens to give his perfect life to redeem us from the sin that we inherited from Adam. What a sacrifice! Not just for Jesus, but for his loving Father, Jehovah.

We now have the opportunity to live forever. Not in heaven, but here on earth. This is what Jehovah promises us in Psalms 37: 10, 11 & 29.

My Gods were rocking and rolling long before Jesus was even born... ;-)

Yes, all cultures had their own religions, they were polytheistic and animistic. Now for example, Ásatrú is the religion that my Scandinavian ancestors practice long before Christianity came along. Christianity is a mere babe in contrast to other religions, actually so are all the monotheistic religions.

Well...there were hundreds if not thousands of religions before Jesus. I'm getting bored. I think I will go eat a noodle.

RAmen.

Nish, when you type, do you see what you write? Do you consciously try to be stupid? Christ came 2000 years ago. The earth has been around for billions of years. last time I checked 4,300,000,000-2000=0 was incorrect math.

The Old Testament. It was so from the beginning. Jesus came in fulfillment of the Old Testament. All other religions through all generations of time were/are man's attempt at twisting the true religion into his own desires.

mithras

http://www.near-death.com/experiences/origen048.html

The Vatican was built upon the grounds previously devoted to the worship of Mithra (600 B.C.). The Orthodox Christian hierarchy is nearly identical to the Mithraic version.

He was buried in a tomb and after three days he rose again. His resurrection was celebrated every year.

He was considered a great traveling teacher and masters. He had twelve companions as Jesus had twelve disciples. Mithras also performed miracles.

Mithra was called "the good shepherd,” "the way, the truth and the light,” “redeemer,” “savior,” “Messiah." He was identified with both the lion and the lamb.

It's not better but the people who believe in it think it is. There was judaism, the greek and egyptian and chinese religions, the religions of the earliest people, of Native americans, indians, and lots more that have faded from history. So, LOTS!!!!!
Plus wars and worshipping and daily life were happening.
