I've got a 1993 Mercedes 220 diesel had it for years, never had to do a thing to it, drives like a new car, great on fuel and cheap to insure.you could most definitely buy one newer than mine for under £2000.

Buy a jaguar xjr in the xj40 shape you will easily find one for under 2000 at the moment plus they are going to shoot up in value in the next few years as they only built 500 of them and according to the jaguar owners club there is only around 120 of them left on the road. You therefore get an unusual car and belive me a fast car to and they easily seat 4 people

I got a Volvo 850 for £1,000. It's cheap to run becuase it's so solid nothing ever goes wrong with it, even at 200k miles. It seats 5, or 4 plus one child on the built-in fold-out child seat. It can run in economy mode to reduce fuel costs, or sport mode where it is surprisingly fast.
It's not exactly unusual, but you don't see many about, especially not the T5 version.

Get a Morris 1000 Estate,
It will do everything you want, carry an amazing amount of gear. Pay no tax, be environmentally responsible running such an old car. You could even take the engine out and put in electrics and batteries.

A Toyota Starlet or Yaris. They are brilliant, I have one but you would be lucky to get one that cheap as the earliest year
is 1999.

hands down, a honda civic!!! we shopped earlier this year, and found nothing that could even compare. our 2004 was totaled, and it held its value so well, the insurance company paid us almost exactly what we paid for it in 2004. amazing!
