just a plain receiver. no dvr or HD capability. mine is starting to malfunction and isn't loading the next 3 day's schedules correctly.

Yes, plugging your valid card into another receiver should work fine.

Some people have 2 (or more) receivers, like at a vacation house. They just bring the card with them and it works fine. Since you are only using the one receiver at a time, there is no theft of service or anything like that.

You should contact Direct TV and let them know your problem, but you can just get a new card from them, slip it in, and your problem is solved!
