Could you tell me if there are any signs when a timing belt idler pulley is on its way out (Zetec-E 1.8 petrol engine).

If its faulty it will get noisy, whiney or rattley .Should be changed at about 50k miles anyway, if in doubt get it changed.

if you have a noise, id first take the belt off and spin all the pulleys, idler p/s, waterpump(if not driven by timing belt)

as all the above, also check your belt is running on the centre of the pulleys. this gives indication of tensioner bearing failure. i would say have belt and tensioners replaced as peace of mind motoring is priceless agaist worry of major engine rebuild.

if the tensioner is failing you may note some chatter at certain rpm's...other than that, no way to tell without inspecting.
