23 years old?
First, he needs to be bring inside the house and be an indoor cat only from this point on! A 23 years old cat is like a 100 year old human! You'll never leave a 100 year old human at a bus-stop or would you? The weather is too cold and there are too many predators out there for your 23 years old cat!
It sounds very much like an abscess. An abscess is usually not fatal but again at 23 years old, your cat's immune system is somehow suppressed, so a simple abscess could very easily turned into a big production!
Your 23 years old cat needs to come inside the house tonight and go to the veterinarian's office first thing tomorrow!

I'm so sorry sweets, I agree, the time to take him to the vet is now. If you just cannot, check for any wound and see if it will drain at all. Please scrub your hands and arms to the elbow preferably with antibacterial soap or scrub and follow that with some betadyne if you can get some before doing anything. Then wipe your cat's wound with the betadyne solution. Because your cat has hair and this can add to the chance of infection I don't recommend that you do anything more than GENTLY push on the knot. IF it ruptures or drains then you can gently manipulate it to get as much infection as possible out, but do not push and squeeze very hard as this can actually help introduce the infection into the bloodstream. Afterwards, once again clean the area with a betadyne solution and then apply an antibacterial ointment like Neosporin to the wound. You will still need to take your cat to the Vet. I do not want you to think I recommend this if you can in ANY way get your cat to a vet now. This is just a last resort. Remember your cat WILL fight you on this so you will need help. You might get a large towel or a blanket or throw to restrain him. Let me once again say. IF POSSIBLE, IN ANY WAY, get your cat to a vet. I almost lost one of my cats by missing a knot like that on his foot. You have an elderly cat and he may not have a long long time left, but don't let him go out like this.

God bless and I will be praying for you and your cat.

Its an abscess - an infection from a bite wound. You need to take your cat to the vet now or tomorrow - he cannot wait for next week, sweatheart, it has to be now. The vet will look into the wound, possibly drain any pus from it, clean it and give your cat some antibiotics.

If I were you, I'd get the cat to the vet sooner than next week. If it's an infection, the longer you wait, the more toxic it becomes and at the age of 23, your cat's immune system is probably slowing down. Infections get into the blood stream and can get into the kidneys, liver and lymphatic system. Please bring your cat to the vet ASAP. Good luck.

You might want to go ahead and take your kitty to the vet sooner than later. This bump could be from fighting with another cat, and can possibly lead to a bad infection. You won't know unless you take them to the vet.

just take him to the vet. i would keep him inside from now on. i don't mean to be cruel but the cat is 23 years old. as for the cut and bump the vet will most likely clean and drain them. keep the area clean and hope for the best. i hope it all turns out for the best.

That sounds like an abcess from a wound. I would get it fixed asap, but as long as it's treated I doubt he'll die from that, if that's what he has and it gets treated soon as possible. Make sure no infection spread. He is elderly, but sounds spunky.
