My pup has been throwing up for a month. We've been to the vet 3 times regarding this matter. I've switched his food to one that is less rich for him. I spaced his feeding times out. I'm currently giving him I/D Diet canned food prescribed by the vet. He is only to have this for the next week. Still about every other day, he is still throwing up. I'm wondering if mixing some oatmeal with is food would help. By the way, they tested his fecal, poked around his tummy and said everything is fine. Any suggestions?

Whenever one of my dogs have an upset stomach or throwing up I always put some boiled hamburger meat and cooked rice in their food. In thise case I would just see if he eats it by itself without any dog food and see if he throws up or not. Then you will know weither food is the culprit and he may have an allgery or sensative stomach to certain dog foods. Plus boiled hamburg. meat and rice settles their stomach.

If I were you I would try that and maybe get a 2nd vets opinion. Or try changing the dogs food to Life's Abundance or Innova Evo (something a little healthy and also not too rich)

Good luck!

I don't know that the oatmeal would help, if you wanted to you could try it, it wouldn't hurt him.

I'd suggest plain rice if you are just looking to give him something easy on the tummy to add to the I/D. If the puppy is still throwing up after only eating ID I'd suspect the vet missed something. Did they do a blood test to see if all the enzymes were OK in the liver, kidneys, etc...Also may want to have a barium series done to see if there is a problem in the digestive tract. What ever you feed for now, do it in small portions through out the day and feed with the bowls up on a small stand off the floor. For a small puppy like that just raise them about 4 inches so he doesn't have to bend over to eat.

The most gentle thing you can give a dog for upset tummy is boiled skinless chicken mixed with plain rice, or the I/D diet from the vet.

I've seen a few animals that had strange reasons they continued to vomit after worms and normal problems were ruled out. A few were a reflex problem where the valve at the bottom of the intestines were it connects to the stomach wasn't working correctly. One was actually a herniated diaphragm, the muscle wall that keeps the liver/stomach separated from the lungs and heart had tore and it was causing the abdominal organs to get up into the chest cavity. It made the animal vomit, but otherwise it was perfectly healthy to outward appearances.

Sounds like you have a dog that has irritable bowel issues, just like people get. My vet had me feed my dog a mixture of skinless/boneless chicken, mixed with cooked white rice. She loved the food, but it also cleared her problem. She does still vomit/nausea about once a week, and the vet said not to worry, so we don't, we just keep an eye on her when she does throw up/check what is coming up/making sure it's not bloody or anything, so far, so good. We only fed the chicken/rice the one time, she eats a fish/potatoe blend of dry food we purchase from the vet. It has helped greatly! Good luck, and please don't feed people food unless told to do so by a vet, people food can be very disstressful and some foods cause dogs pain, or are toxic(like chocolate). Be kind to him, he is depending on you.

Have they x-rayed his chest to view his esophagus? He may outgrow this particular kind of problem but some do not, please check out the following links I have provided it may help to understand what is possibly happening

you will need shockwave to view this site that shows what happen with a dog with megasophagus

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_megaesophagus.html

This is a support group for owners of dogs with megaesophagus
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/megaesophagus/

This specially designed chair helps to get food to bypass the esophagus and into the stomach so they are not throwing it up
http://geocities.com/bailey_chair/ and if you look at the link of other dogs using you will see a couple daschunds using so it could be a genetic problem in the breed that is occuring in some lines.

personally I don't feed my dogs any table food, but if you want you can try a little bit to see what happens, but I would asked the vet doctor first before you do. good luck.
