Are people really into giving good answers or racking up the points? It's not like the points get you something.

I mean don't get me wrong if you have one, I'm happy for you. I'm not a jealous guy. I'm just making a point because I'm looking for the top contributors to give some really good answers but the ones that have answered so far, I was a little disappointed :O)

"Top contributor" does not refer to your point score at all.
A Top Contributor is a member of the Answers community who has shown that they are knowledgeable in a particular category. Each Answers user can be a top contributor in up to three categories.
The top contributor badge is dynamic you earn it or lose it depending on your recent participation in a particular category. The more actively you contribute, the more likely you will earn a badge. Just like featured users or category leaders, it's another way to feature community members who might otherwise be overlooked.

They say the 'top contributor' badge has nothing to do with points or best answer percentage, but rather with the 'quality' of your answers and the quantity of your participation.
Personally, I'm not buying that bit about 'quality answers'.... I am quite sure there is NOT some member of the Y! staff sitting down reading hundreds of thousands of answers to check for 'quality'! And even if there was, 'quality' is a matter of mere opinion.
Do they really expect us to believe that somebody read Judas Rabbi's 88 THOUSAND answers to check for quality!?
(I'm not dissin' the rabbi, btw... just making a point.)

"Nya nya, I bet you're jealous!" LOL
No, being called "top contributor" just means one has most points, which can come from the quantity of answers (2 points each) and/or the quantity of "best answers" (10 points each).
It can mean one has been with YA for a relatively long time, or that one is spending waaaaaay too much time in front of the computer!
I really wouldn't worry about it, it is meaningless. (In fact it embarasses me, because it advertises to everybody how much time I waste on YA!)
EDIT: (excuse the copy and paste)
"A Top Contributor is someone in the Answers community who, through their participation on Answers, has shown that they are knowledgeable in a particular category. Each Answers user can be a Top Contributor in up to three categories."

Top Contributor has nothing to do with points or level. Read the blog.

It just means, in my case anyway, that we have REALLY boring jobs and hang out in R&S all day to keep from going stark raving mad.

Or rather, it does not mean a thing; does not mean anything; or does not bear significance to anything
