What's the difference between catsup and ketchup??

Question

I know....dumb question but, I am just curious. Is there a difference? If not - why do they call it two different names? Thanks in advance for adding one more thing to my knowledge of useless information. : )

Catsup and Ketchup is the same.

Probably manufacturers being different. Also, catsup is an older spelling.

Del Monte used to sells it as "catsup" (looking at old ads)
while Heinz sells it as "ketchup".

In the 1980s, there was some issue over how to classify 'Ketchup' under the federal food program, and the feds, those ever-clever fellows, declared that Ketchup would appear on school lunch menus as a vegetable. This created a lot of angst over at the old Del Monte Catsup works because, suddenly, their Catsup, due to its spelling, was out of the loop and excluded from the government's approved list. Not very long after that, Del Monte changed the name of its product from 'Catsup' to 'Ketchup.'

"Ketchup" is the original, British English. "Catsup" was/is an Americanism, mostly used in the south, midwest and west, but over the past 3 decades "ketchup" has been steadily replacing it.
