Unless your a real chocolate lover then I guess it's okay to use chocolate frosting on chocolate cake. However, that does not fancy me. For devil's cake, I'd use White Chocolate frosting. It's hard to find now-a-days, so I suggest you make it. It comes out best when home-made.

INGREDIENTS
2 ounces white chocolate
1/2 cup butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup milk
3 cups confectioners' sugar
DIRECTIONS

Melt the butter and chocolate together, and beat until smooth, then add vanilla.
Beat in 1 cup of confectioners sugar. Add half the milk mixture, then 1 cup confectioners sugar, then the other half of the milk, then 1 cup confectioners sugar.

My favorite frosting is chocolate fudge, made with powdered sugar, lots of powdered cocoa, melted butter and enough water to make it spreadable.

If you dislike that much chocolate, I've used 2 others that are also good. One is made by whipping heavy whipping cream with cocoa and a bit of sugar or sweetener. You could skip the cocoa and use just whipped cream, maybe with strawberries between the layers. Certainly elegant and rich without being chocolatey.

I've also used a coconut version of old-fashioned boiled frosting, but that used whipped egg whites that aren't cooked. Many folks are uncomfortable with any egg product which isn't fully cooked.

i personally love devils food with chocolate frosting but good alternatives are the cream cheese frosting and white frosting.
or you can get the caramel ice cream topping and fudge topping, microwave them together and drizzle over the cake. it is just scrumptious!
