The French army. We have to look at statistics. The French has more soldiers to draft. The ONLY thing that has prevented the French from Taking the English over is the Island thing. The Americans did not want to invade imperial Japan, despite being even more powerful. Islands are hard to invade. The French also have an Better Econemy. Of course the Brits have America. The Franks got Europe. That includes Germany. Army wise, France. Navy wise. England. Again, Island. Air Force, England. Allies, France I think. Plus the Both got the FFL and the SAS, but the FFL has the same training as the Regular army. They are not Special, they just get sent out more often. Soooo, I pearsonly think France is better, and has the capabilities. The only thing that makes it difficult is the Island thing.

I wouldn't just discount the French army just like that. They have a proud history as well. Like us they've lost their share of battles. What we tend to forget is in our history lessons back in school you generally only get taught the battles you win and not the ones you lose. I fully agree in WW2 their performance was pretty rubbish, but some of that was down to extremely low moral. I think too much emphasis is placed on the French performance in WW2. The modern French army is completely different animal. Also the French foreign legion are legendary soldiers. If you've seen any of the documentaries about them you will see these soldiers strut about full of confidence, why, because they know they're good! They're not all foreign before you say anything.
The British soldier is at the very top of the tree. The fact is if you have a well led, well equipped and well motivated army you will be hard to beat. So I believe that's what it boils down to.
Look I spent 10 years in the British Army and enjoyed my time with a great bunch of blokes, all I'm trying to do here is have a more balanced viewpoint

The British Army is without a doubt is the best army in the world. It may not always have the best equipment and technology, but the British army has definitely got the best trained, most skilled and professional soldiers in all the world.
* The British Army are without question the finest soldiers. They are the standard all others aim to and Sandhurst is were the rest of the world comes to train their armies.
* It hasn't lost a major conflict in its five hundred year history and it was the back bone to the largest Empire on the earth ever. The British are too modest when it comes to its armed forces as it likes to keep a low profile.
* The best army in the world be a combination of the US, British, Australian and Canadian forces. The UK/Australian SAS and SBS special forces are simply the best. When it comes to the best regular troops, I would have to say it is the Gurka regiments from Nepal who are part of the British army. I have heard that during the Falklands War that the Gurkas fought the heavily armed Argentinian invaders with their knives and beat them hands down.
* If you had a level playing field combat situation (same amount of soldiers) between any army in the world and the British the British would win full stop.
* The British Army is without any shadow of a doubt the world's best trained and combat experienced Army of either the ancient or modern world. It has participated in far more wars than the whole of the rest of the worlds armies put together and that is historical fact. It also raised and trained half of the worlds existing armed forces today. Even the Indian and Pakistan armies have a common heritage being formed by the british. There initial training is the longest in the world for infantry and marines. Their assault courses put the USMC and special forces to shame as few can complete them and those that can in the US forces take twice as long as the British. Britain does not have the high tech equiptment of the US Armed Forces due to the fact successive modern governments whose politicians have never served in the Armed Forces, continue to starve them of proper equiptment and keep reducing the armed forces size. Individual infantry and Armoured Regiments have accumulated more battle honours for their colors and gideons than the combined infantry regiments of any other worlds army. Sadly they are only allowed to display a very limited and selected number of battle honours on their colours and gideons. They do not display any battle honours for the American War of Independence (Amercan Revolutionary war) because it is the only war they ever lost and is regarded as a civil war fought overseas, kin against kin. Today they are also the best paid armed forces. The minimum initial training for non combat arms is 13 weeks, for artillary and armour it is 18 weeks and for the infantry it is 26 weeks (30 parachute Regiment). The Corps of Royal Marines of the Royal Navy is now 33 weeks.
* The SAS are without doubt the best special services in the world, not the Navy SEALs. The SAS have a brilliant track record of success after success playing huge roles across the world.

It is worth noting that the failures of French arms have been due to political interference, rather than due to the average poilu.
The Daguerre Division performed well in the 1st Gulf War, performing a similar role to that perfomed by the Italian Ariete Armoured Division in the German/Italian forces in the desert campaign in WW2.
French politicians actually admitted that they admire the British way of soldiering and are aiming to emulate us. They have disposed of conscription and are building a professional military.
France still has a tendency to be a maverick country, politically, hence the reliability of the French military must be questioned, inasmuch that a military that is always being buggered around by politicians must lose morale. If the French could sort out their politics, their forces could be as good as the British.
I am disappointed to see obviously partisan and non-reasoned criticism of the French in some answers to this question. The French are a proud nation of great traditions. Their railway system functions, they have not abandoned their heavy industries such as shipbuilding, the Rafale fighter is almost wholly indigenous, like the LeClerc tank and the other AMX products. French food (not haute cuisine, but ordinary home cooking) beats burgers and fries hands down. There is much in France that us Britons could emulate, in the same way that the French could emulate some of our characteristics. It is all a matter of taste, or lack of it.

Obviously the British army, by far.
It hurts me to defend them but I have to admit that the French army has made improvements over the last decade. LeClerc MBTs, HOT ATGMs, Rafale fighters, DeGaule class CVN. These are all modern combat systems with a high rating from Janes Defense.
However, anyone who has been in the field could tell you that it is the soldiers/airmen/navy that crew these systems that make the difference. The British Army has a lot more experience as well as a reputation of unsurpassed discipline.
Added later:
Phildamaree, I thought the last of the Ghurka regiments was disbanded? Are they still serving? I agree the Ghurka regiments have the reputation as the best light infantry in the world.

Disappointing to see so many pathetic anti-French comments here. The French have been one of our (UKs) best allies for the last Century and, like the British army, they have been involved in a number of missions overseas including currently providing the force on the Israel-Lebanon border, and UN forces in Ivory Coast and Haiti. their special forces have also been active in Afghanistan.

Depends on the context of the question..
If you mean, Fighting ability - then the British Armed Forces Win Easily
If you mean, running away shouting "HELP MUMMY!" then i'm afraid that the French Armed Forces Win that one easily..
P.S. Im sure that this was a fun question, but if there was a real fight between The British and the French it might be a good thing to remember that both are Nuclear Powers, It would be a very short war i think.. NO WINNERS!
