I am fairly new to Buddhism. As I have studied it, I have realized many of my initial ideas of what it was are not true.

For instance, Buddhists do not need to be vegetarians.

What have you been surprised at, or if you do not know much about Buddhism, what are some of the things that you have heard?

1saintofgod: Your comments have reminded me of something that I like about Buddhism. You, as a Christian (I'm guessing), believe I will go to Hell because I do not believe in your God. I, as a Buddhist, think you will be reincarnated as a being appropriate to how you have lived this life. It has nothing to do with who or what you believe in, it is about whether you have kind thoughts, and are respectful of others.

It's being taught by some lamas that it's better to be vegetarian in this day and age, but only if you can be. One lama had been "ordered" by his doctor to eat meat, so he only ate it every other day or something... it's about a middle way, not extremism, which isn't good.

Just my 2 cents for clarification.

I tried meditation to try and find an inner peace, read about, but not quite studied Buddhism, found it to be most enlightening and marvelled at the fact that it was the first 'religion' that does not, as far as I am aware (you can correct me if I am wrong) pay homage to a Deity, but rather followed Buddha's teaching about ones inner self and peace that can be found therein.
If I had to choose a religion it would be Buddhism. The meditation and calmness that it brings about in you is worth it alone.

Bad actions or Iron shackles, Good actions. golden chains, they both hold one to the wheel of the awagowaon.
Karma is to be balanced
respect for all life
all things you do or think create Karma.
when you chant you must clear the mind of all thoughts.be open to the spirit within.
It a simple religion I think.

Prehaps you might look into Eckankar
I wish you the very best on your spiritual journey

he once told me he thought i was a bear in my last past life

No need for gods, attention is the big thing.

Before enlightenment, the mountain is a Mountain, the river is a River.
During enlightenment, The mountain is Not just a mountain, the river is Not just a river.
After enlightenment, the mountain IS a mountain, the river IS a river!

Buddhism believes you can be reincarnated at a cockroach.
Syncrynistic Buddhism (Decadent American Buddhism believes you can only be reincarnated as a human...a mathmatical impossibility.

Most Gays have no alternative for religion except Buddism which doesn't 'believe in material reality.'

My advice? "Do your own thing, baby!"

Like most religions it has enough variety to accomodate just about anyone, tho really it is even more flexible since it doesn't really require you to have faith in anything except that enlightenment is going to make you life a lot better.

I like Buddhists. I find many of their ideas are similar if not identical to my own beliefs.

It's a nice and peaceful religion. Thanks for the information. I as well thought that you had to be a vegetarian to be a Buddhist.
