My brother lives in Brooklyn and it is considerably less expensive to live there than Manhattan. The further away from Manhattan you live, the cheaper the apartments, however, you also get closer to not-so-safe regions of Brooklyn.

Park Slope is a great place to start. Then move further from there. Check online and talk to people around the area. Often you can find places by word of mouth or look on bulletin boards for openings.

Good luck!

Brooklyn is less expensive than Manhattan, but most of it is not cheap. If you are looking for an apartment, start with the NY times, see what brokers have listings in Brooklyn and call the brokers up to help you find a place to live. It's how most New Yorkers get their apartments.
