Who knows... but if a religious group says it's so then it MUST be so!

There are two different things people are referring to here:
1) How long ago did Adam live
2) How old the Earth is, including the time it took for the Creation.
The Bible gives us enough information to deduce that Adam lived about 6,000 years ago. However, it is not clear about how long the Creation took. The English translation of 6 "days" is incorrect. The original Hebrew can be translated several different ways, with the most reasonable being "time periods". Translated this way, the Creation story matches up perfectly with what science tells us happened. Amazing that the Bible got it right thousands of years before man was able to figure out why it was right!

It does not say that exactly in the Bible, but there are people who take the 'days' in Genesis to be actual 24-hour days. From this, they count back the years in the genealogies in the Old Testament, and from this come up with the number of 6000.
Many people (myself included) believe in a 'day-age' theory, which basically means that the 'days' are not physical 24-hour spans of time, but rather whole eons in some cases. This way, science and religion can be tied up together - science can show that the Earth is millions of years old, but Christians can still believe in the Creation, and that it happened more than 6000 years ago (in fact, millions of years ago).

It is an interpretation of some passages in the bible. One that says that to God 1000 years is as a day, and another that says that God created the Earth in 6 days and on the 7th he rested.
I'm not sure off the top of my head where exactly those two passages are.

The bible doesn't teach the earth is 6000yrs old. Biblical scholars have deciphered that the time from Adam to Jesus was 4000 years through the family tree.
However, there is a geologist that uses his knowledge and the grand canyon to argue that the earth is quite young approx 6000 yrs or so old, and that the carbon dating system is flawed. I'm not a geologist or archaeologist, so... I'll leave it to them to debate it

No where but their is proof in the earth and in the universe around us that explain 6000-9000 year old. Also their is proof in the Bible if you go through when adam was created to today.

It is not in the Bible in exact words. Tracing genealogy back to Adam makes it plausible that he lived 6,000 years ago (if you take the Bible in literal terms). I believe the creationists derive the 6,000 year old earth hypothesis from this.

Bible scholars have determined/estimated that from the time of Creation to the Great Flood (Noah's time) was 2000 years. Then from that time to Jesus' birth was 2000 years. And from then until now is about 2000 years.

You will not find anywhere in the Bible how old the world is. Science groups from creation-Scientist to Evolutionists will give you various answers to how old the world is. I personally believe that it is no more than 10 ,000 years old.

From the years of life of the people named and the time frame given
The unknown is how long adam was in the garden, since he did not age there,
Also of course the use of estimnated life spans, and unknown missing lines.
