rotator cuff, or any other surgery so high on your body, is too far up on your spine for an epidural. in that area, it would probably stop your breathing and they would intubate you to save your life. that is why they use general anesthesia for that surgery.

A mild sedative and a local anesthetic may be given prior to the procedure to relax the patient and numb the injection site. The epidural space is located between the dura and the interior surface of the spinal canal and contains veins, arteries, and fat. Epidural injection is the injection of medication into the epidural space. The epidural injection may help the injury to heal by reducing inflammation. It may occasionally provide permanent relief, but pain relief for several days, weeks or months while the injury/cause of pain is healing. local anesthetic is given. An epidural or spinal needle is then inserted into the epidural space of the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and caudal spine or cervical, thoracic or lumbosacral nerve roots. An anesthetic and steroid are injected into the epidural space.

The doctor is able to watch the needle as it moves through tissues to its destination. Fluoroscopy makes it possible to place the medicine close to the exact lesion location (pinched nerve). Other modifications include injecting into the foramen, the spinal windows where the nerves exit.

You are placed lying on your stomach on the x-ray table and positioned in such a way that the physician can best visualize the low back using x-ray guidance in the operating room. The skin on the spine is scrubbed with a sterile solution.

Next, the physician numbs a small area of skin on the low back with numbing medicine.

After the numbing medicine has been given time to be effective, the physician directs a small needle, using x-ray guidance into epidural space. A small amount of contrast (dye) is injected to insure proper needle position in the epidural space. A mixture of numbing medicine (anesthetic), and anti-inflammatory (steroid) is injected.

Having had it done before, I am truly glad that it works really well.

they stick a big needle in your back at the bottom of your spine and you barely feel the stick before it's completely numb.

An epidural catheter after insertion. The site has been prepared with Tincture of iodineThe term epidural is often short for epidural anesthesia, a form of regional anesthesia involving injection of drugs through a catheter placed into the epidural space. The injection can cause both a loss of sensation (anaesthesia) and a loss of pain (analgesia), by blocking the transmission of pain signals through nerves in or near the spinal cord.

The epidural space (sometimes called the extradural space or peridural space) is a part of the human spine inside the spinal canal separated from the spinal cord and its surrounding cerebrospinal fluid by the dura mater.

Got one of those with my 3rd baby. Pretty good pain blocker. I could still feel pressure and some sensation.

Terrible back ache at the site for weeks afterwards. Didn't have that with the 2 natural babies so I assume ti was the epidural.

they will give twilight sleep via a IV to make you sleepy and a local Novocaine injections at the surgery site
I never heard of a epidural for a shoulder surgery? that's where the rotator cuff is located
you'd be numb from the neck down and most likely couldn't breath on your own needing to be intubated

An epidural goes through the spine. It works miracles.

why are they giving you an epidural for a shoulder? If they paralyze you from the waist up then you won't be able to breathe, swallow, or any of that. That doesn't make any sense.
