I would have said to her, "That's funny. Several people have remarked how much he looks like YOU!"
The thing is you have to address this type of situation the minute it happens. If you dont, and try to bring it up later, then your mother-in law can say 'I don't know what you're talking about' or "I don't remember" and then YOU will look like the crazy person.
Next time this happens (and believe me, there WILL be a next time!) let her know that a REAL grandmother is loving and kind and would NEVER say such a thing! If that doesn't work, be sure you tell her that the kids LOVE their "real" grandma-YOUR mother.

That's an awful thing to say! Your mother-in-law is a miserable old witch. She's probably going senile and losing her mind and vision. Your son is a beautiful little child. Try to forget what she said.
Talk to your husband about what she said. He should tell her to THINK before she opens her BIG MOUTH from now on. Avoid contact with her until she sincerely apologizes.

The base part of me says slap her from here to high eternity, for making such a mindless statement, but the rational side says, stay calm. The next time you get the chance to speak to her out of the presence of the children, explain to her that you find it extremely insensitive and unkind that she would make that statement. Tell her that you are sure that she loves all of them equally, but by making that statement could lead the child to think otherwise and that could haunt him for life. Children tend to remember hurtful words. Is this how she would want him to remember her? My parents always used proverbs to teach us lessons. Here's one for your mother-in-law: "The rock that offends you in the morning could become your cornerstone in the evening."

When you listen to your mother-in-law say that, you are hearing her words that are based on what she thinks in here own mind, and that is based on only what she knows (and wants to know, if you know what I mean). She probably doesn't know that beauty goes much deeper to the heart. It doesn't just stop at the skin. True beauty has nothing to do with appearance at all.

ignore it. honestly, there isn't anything you can do to make it better. if you try, it will only get worse. my mother in law, blonde and blue eyed, pasty white skin, mother of five blondes, took one look at my kids when they were about 5 and 3 and said...............YOUR children are DARK aren't they????? my oldest son has a reddish brown hair, with brown eyes. very pale skin like hers. my younger son has blonde hair and brown eyes, but, his skin is more of an olive like mine. unbelievable how rude in laws can be. she doesn't even count them as her son's children. they are MINE, like they are stepkids or something. her other grandkids are all blondes. and i want to know how that could happen when all their spouses are dark hair and eyes too. just my luck i guess!!!!! can't do anything right to please her, had to have DARK kids as well!!!! LOL!!!! hang in there.

I would have told her you consider all your children are beautiful and you love them equally. I would also have told her you found her remark offensive and you'd rather she didn't express negative opinions of your kids. What a mean thing to say. Stand up to her now, but be polite. If you let this slide who knows what she'll say/do next?

I would just have said, "he is beautiful in my eyes". She is really cruel and I would keep the kids away from such an opinionated cynic because she might not treat Caleb as she treats his siblings.

You should tell your husband what was said and than you should have a talk with her and tell her how rude you think it was for her to even think of saying that. And than let your husband know that you had a talk with her. Yea that was very rude she should be thankful for even having a grandson !!!! Good Luck

How the f*** does she think she could say something like that? What does your husband think about it. He should have a serious talk with her about it cause there is no way anyone should be saying that around your kids
