Well- first question is, who's your audience? you might think a good photo is a good photo, but you have to consider who the judges are. I've learned from experince that if you the competition is being judged by everypeople, rather than other photographers, then you want something much more straightforward- like a scene with people relaxing on a beach or dancing at a club, a good photograph, but one that clearly and straightforwardly addresses the topic.
If you are being judged by other photographers, especially otehr photographers who have been working on the same subject, then you must get much get much more creative not just with your photography, but with your subject. If this is the case, I would suggest doing something more complex- like a person doing drugs who is clearly at a difficult stage in their life, showing how "relaxing" might nto be positive, or a group of people trying to unwind in different ways, showing a strong contrast - such as a guy and a girl dancing, but the girl is trying to unwind with her friends and the guy is trying to relax with her, or a scene somewhere relaxing like a park where some people are playing a loud game or something, and other people are trying to relax in a rowboat, or having a picnic. Good luck.

I took a picture the other day of a girl sitting on an old dead tree looking at the sunset. The effect to it makes her look like a sillouet if you know what I mean. It is real peaceful looking and has a soft touch to it. You could use that idea if you wanted. If you want to I will e-mail you the picture so you can look at it. Just e-mail me with you address.....mine is cwood6_10@yahoo.com..... You could look at my website www.instilledmemories.com, on the senior page. It is a slideshow but for some people it wont work. Check it out there if you want!

Extreme sports should give you plenty of material. Thinking perhaps of extreme mountain biking where they go round a muddy course in the woods (cycle cross?). That way you get action, scenery and get to test your skills.

Going fishing... maybe people in a boat, or laying down napping with the pole next to them on a river bank somewhere.
