Peppe, border collieX, is getting old. He is 15 yrs now. He's slowing down, can't get up and down the stairs easily, throws up often, and has a slight heart murmur. Just had him at the vet 2 months ago for yearly exam and vaccinations. The Vet is aware of all his current health issues. I'm scared to take him back to get his heart rechecked. He's not in pain and he is still interested in life and will go for short walks. I'm very worried the next vet visit will be the last.

Have you tried using a senior dog food or canned? Older dogs get more sensitive digestions and their teeth wear down making it harder to thoroughly chew their food.
As far as the heart murmur, dogs can live long active lives with heart murmurs so that is something you should not worry too much about unless your vet says it is serious.
Your dog has had a long happy life with you and you sound like a good caring parent. Bless you and the days remaining for the two of you. Enjoy the time you have left together.

I know exactly how you feel; I went through the same thing with my older dog a few years ago (she’s since passed).
If you’re worried about his health, take him to the vet. It will only be “his last” if you choose. The vet cannot make you put down your dog. You know him best; if you feel he still enjoys life, then tell the vet it’s just not time. The vet may be able to prescribe some medication to help him enjoy the time he has left even more. There’s nothing to be afraid of.

15 years is a very long time for any dog to live. Did the vet say anything about his condition? Sometimes achy/arthitic joints can be helped with 'chondroitin' pills. There are many arthritis medications you might want to try. Unfortunatley, as humans, we far outlive our best friends. And we would do anything to keep them with us but sometimes this leads to more suffering. He may live longer yet but take this time to spend the best time with him and give lots of care, a warm place to sleep to help his joints. Feed him a 'senior' food which may be easier on his stomach. Or small bits of wet food. Just like a elderly human, regular foods get harder to digest. If he still enjoys his walks then take him for short ones. You should pride yourself in providing him with care that allowed him to reach this age.

I feel for you. It is really hard to see our animals get older. But we all want to see our pets comfortable and happy. If your dog is supposed to go back for a follow up visit, make the appointment and don't fear. As long as he is not in pain, has an interest in walks, eats and drinks....he will be fine. Talk things over with your vet if you have any concerns or fears. Best wishes! :)

Dont be worried we all start moving slower and not doing activities we used to when we age. Your dog is fine just enjoy the rest of his life here with you now. Just prepare yourself for when his time does come. He is old and getting on still enjoying his life with you. Life is too short no matter what species you are.

At that age & his condition there is only one way forward, just love him so he will want to live. Then even though it may not be for too long, you will also feel you have made his last time good. An old dog is like an old preson with food, simple & nourishing & what he likes.

Its tough to think about not having your pet around. I just lost my lab of 15 years 2 weeks ago. But do whats right by your dog. If he is not feeling well bring him in. Good Luck!

My heart goes out to you. We had to make the decision six days ago to put our 17 year old maltese, who was blind to sleep. We have debated over this for the last couple of years. You WILL know when that time comes. Your heart will tell you. Listen to your heart.......you will know when the quality of life has left him. I'm praying for you.

Don't be scared to take him to the vet, be scared not to. The vet can give meds to help your senior enjoy his time left.

It is a dog, and they don't live forever even if we like to think that they do. And I know that it will be hard, but you need to let the doctor decide what is best for your dog. He may want to put him down but trust me they don't want to do that anymore than you want to. But they know what is best, so trust them. Before you take him in. Take a picture of you and your dog, for memories.
