Because it simplifies connecting the batteries in series. Most batteries are 1.5 volts, and frequently the device needs 6 volts, or 4 batteries in series. 2 batteries in series would deliver 3 volts. Etc. When inserting batteries in "reverse directions", you'll see short wires connecting the closest ends.

In lots of stuff, the batteries take up too mush room,so they loop them back beside the first row. One row with the + going
one way, the other with the + going the opposite. It,s like playing follow the leader and every one lining up and following the leader around a tree and back. they are all facing the line in front of them. this is called " in series".

with 2 1,5 volt batteries -+ and -+ connection makes 6 volts (serial) and opposite still 1,5 volts in parallel connectionbut lasts more.
