Goggle maps are the best...but try MTA maps if you need train or bus info.

Try Hagstrom for Nassau or Suffolk County. Those maps give you detail on every street in the county. If you want to use the computer, then try mapquest or yahoo! maps. Personally I carry an Hagstrom in my car. It's like the credit card commercial, it don't leave home without it.
