If you play your cards right you should be able to get a salvage DOHC motor for a few hundred bucks. I know the DOHC wasn't a common motor but for whatever reason they are floating around out there just as a much as SOHC. I would just do a engine swap, alot easier, easiest car you'll ever do a engine swap on too. My advice don't even mess around with converting a motor to DOHC, you'll just end up with a heart-ache. Just look around and wait a little bit for a DOHC motor to show up some where.

If you do this, buy a aftermarket flexplate. They stock one's break............alot.
Like I said before, easiest engine swap you can do period.

actually this is not very hard at all, the SOHC and DOHC are the exact same engine, just different heads. Go to a scrap yard and find a stratus or neon with the 2.0 dohc and they should let you take the entire topend off for about 200$. Go to this website, it is covered alot. Dodgeforum.com

The short answer is yes, but why not just buy a Neon that already has the DOHC engine? They are on the street every day. I realize that owners, who like their present car, figure they can save some money and have a more spirited car at the same time. Unfortunately, it often does not turn out that way.
Erich Heuschele covers your question at http://www.neons.org/ in paragraph 1.2.7.5 in the "Neon FAQs" section. It is an eye opener.
