merchant or agency that you pay will definitely delete the mark off your credit report?
Do you just have to take their word for it, or is there some way of guaranteeing they will live up to their word?

Like slabberd said - get it in writing.

The pay for delete letter that you send (sent certified mail return receipt) should request that they remove any and all tradelines they have placed on your files with all credit reporting agencies.

If you request (or they had offered) to pay a portion of the amount as payment in full, request that they will NOT:
continue to collect the remainder of the debt
sue for the remainder of the debt
sell, trade or return the remainder of the debt

Make them sign and return a copy of the letter

You can find pay for delete sample letters templates in some of the links in my profile

Here's the linky to one letter template for you, there is more scattered around in the credit forum, but this is a good one. Be sure to read the whole thread.

This link gives you the actual form letter to be used and tells you how you must RECEIVE the contemporaneous writing from the collection agency.

Good luck!

Never take their word for anything. Get it in writing before you pay.
