Apart from the obvious medication from the doctor, is there ANYTHING that I can do or give her to help her over this???

Is there any foods or complimentary medication I can give her, anything to help with the itching and pain????

Try aqueous zinc, it really works as shingles is a form of herpes. See: http://george-eby-research.com/html/herpes.html

My friend tried this with his cold sores and it worked REALLY well, they never came back.

You can get zinc sulfate from a chemical supplier (that's what my friend did, so I know that works at least!), or you can try dissolving zinc supplements that contain zinc gluconate (and DON'T have vitamin C as this reduces absorption of zinc ions) in water and applying a cloth soaked in the zinc-water for a ten minutes.

(oh from that site, they say regarding shingles: "How about chicken pox and shingles? Will zinc work with them? These are caused by the varicella zoster virus, a close cousin to the herpes simplex viruses. I have not found any medical literature on the subject, but I did have occasion to see if it would work. About 1990, a lady friend of mine came down with chicken pox, or shingles on her face. She was a painful mess. I told her about my research with zinc and she decided to try a mild solution of zinc gluconate on her face. She said it worked and the next time I saw her, several days later, her face was clear and she was very happy." So it sounds like it's worth a shot!)

I'm not aware of any foods that can help at all, I took painkillers along with the tablets prescribe by the doctor if I remember rightly it had to be a painkiller that didn't contain paracetamol, but I'd definitely seek advice from the chemist before giving her anything as she's in her silver thread days.

Give your Mum my sympathy its a terrible complaint, hope she's well soon

Sorry ,but you shouldn't be asking this question on Q&A...............Shingles comes in different forms.......Some under the skin, which has to be treated with in jections....Others with medication.........Medication and injections can affect you in other ways.............Your doctor knows her past history....so be guided by him as to what is best for your mother......

Oh dear, I'm sorry. My mum had it too, it's horrid. I can't think of anything to help, except perhaps for Echinacea, to help boost her immune system. Hope she feels better soon. I presume you have asked a pharmacist this question?
