what does it mean when a guy who is newly single (after a relatinship of 4 years) wants to stay "single" but tells you he wants to casually date and likes my companionship?

he wants to date but in his head he thinks its to soon but he doesn't want to be lonely. or maybe he just wants sex. was he hurt in the last relationship? is so then maybe he wants to go out with someone but is afraid of getting hurt.

It means hes interested but not THAT interested. Hed like to get to know you better and go on dates but this doesnt mean hes going to be your boyfriend any time soon. Just take caution in this and dont get to close (phydical wise) cuz u could get hurt. but if you enjoy his company too and want to do the same then why not. It also means he wants to be able to date other people which isnt so fun for you. unless your ok with that.
