I have a tattoo on my arm, it's a band, kinda tribal looking but not really, kinda hard to explain but either way it's a band, and it colored in dark pink and purple. So what I want to do is make it bigger. I want to keep the style of it but just expand it so it goes from about a inch above my elbow, up my arm and around the back of my shoulder. The thing is, I want it done in black. So if I got the existing tat done over in black and then added to it, would it look alright? Or would the blacks be way different because part of it is covering up color? Or do you have any suggestions? Thanks

You are saying you want to turn your band into a half sleeve? You need to get into a good studio and have an artist work with you on this. You might not get full coverage on the existing band but going black helps. You might need a couple sessions of saturation on it as well but do you really want that much black in one spot there?

I guess we would have to really see the design in person which is back to my earlier statement about getting into a studio.

Much of what Scooter is saying is incorrect.

The blacks wouldn't be the same first off and, I don't know if you have ever tried to do a color over a color before, but sometimes they don't cover. The original color can bleed through and then there is the matter of how much scarring can occur from covering an existing piece. When a cover up is done the needle has to go deeper than the original tat to get the color into the pigment of your skin. My suggestion would be to just go with the existing colors and have them sort of incorporated into the rest of the piece. Not completely use the same color but just have some areas shaded or high lighted with your original colors. Good luck, and I would like to know what your ink looks like now and what the finished product looks like as well.

I can't picture it well in my head without an image from you. If you are trying to cover colors with black, it shouldn't be too big of an issue

The main thing is that you like how it will look. And if you aren't sure how it will turn out, talk with a local tat artist and have him/her work with you to get a drawing done so you can see how it will look and make changes from there.
