I live in tampa. I cannot travel to NY. My relative has been missing since May 2006. NYPD told me to report the matter to local tampa police and not to them. Local tampa police told me that i need to report the matter to NYPD. I am confused. Please Help.

You need to contact a detective in New York, not a dispatcher. Then you may get somewhere, also ask if there is a missing persons department, don't let them give you the run around, make them listen to you. As difficult as it is, you also need to check with them about any people that were found deceased, your family member could be a Doe.

You need to go through the steps to file a missing persons report. I'm not sure why the NYPD is turning you away, but if you're concerned then ask to speak with someone higher up about filing a missing persons report and if they tell you that you need to do it elsewhere, ask them for help. They are police officers, that is their job and they should consider taking you seriously versus turning you away.
