Birds are amazingly resilient, and he's likely found shelter. In someone else's house. Many people every year find lost birds. Parrots, cackatiels, conures... and many of these good hearted people report the animal as found.

Check with your local shelter to see if he's been reported found, or check the bird lost and found online.

It's amazing how many of these birds get lost, and found, every year.

Ooh, I am so sorry. This happened with my bird as well. If you put the bird cage outside- on the side with the door facing up so it is easy for "pepper" to get into. Put some food in the bottom of the cage in case he comes around when you are not out, this way he can at least eat and he will hang around.

This actually happened with my first cockatiel and I did not think to look in the paper. It stormed that night as well. I had saved allot of old newspapers because I was going to move. A friend told me I should look in the paper and I found him a month later with a very nice lady.

I live in the New Orleans area and I was working as a security guard after the hurricane. At my post one day I noticed a couple of parrots eating in the grass. I tried to approach them for about a week and then realized that they were doing just fine and after observing them for a couple of months there was an entire flock of them. My Dad said there was a write up in the paper about them that apparently a couple had escaped from their owners and procreated enough to form a colony. The most I had seen was about 10 at a time. First, i am very sorry for your run away. I now what you are going through. I had a bird fly away too. Just last week. The thing is, is that birds can be smart. My bird, Sunny, stayed right close to home. If i were you keep calling him and leave food out for him. Call him once and a while so he nows you are there. Dont be worried though. My bird Sunny, flew away and he is usually so loud and always response to my voice, but he didnt outside. I knew he was there though becuase he would tweet once and a while and i saw him fly. Doesnt mean that he has passed though. So i understand what you are going through. Pray at night for him and talk, so he nows you are there. I wish you the best of luck.

I have the same experience. Stop blaming yourself. It doesn't help.

Very little chance for the bird to find its way home.

Try putting up posters. Walk around the neighbourhood in the morning and evening to look out.

Try leaving the empty cage with some bird food.

As someone suggested, lookup lost and found ad in the paper and check with animal shelter.

I have been doing that too.

Good luck!

I had a cockatiel that flew away once, about twenty years ago. I lived in an apartment complex and, one day a man from another building was outside feeding the birds when my cockatiel landed on his head. Word had gotten around about my bird and pretty soon he came home!. He was my first bird, I had him for about 17 years. Now I have my african grey (Gigi), a moluccan rescue (Victor) ,a sun conure rescue (Maddie), an eclectus named Stinky (because he is!), two pair of african greys, a pair of blue and golds, lovebirds and cockatiels! Good luck

Depends how closely attached the bird is to humans. If he was quite attached as you indicate, he'll hole up at someone's house.
Have you put in to a lost and found? Or put some signs up around the neighborhood? Someone may have sighted Pepper and give you some leads.

Good luck!

try putting up flyers, and maybe after the rain stops put his cage outside and sit near it, maybe giving one of his favorite calls every few minutes, it sounds kinda stupid, but birds r atracted to what feels familier to them

btw, i read and article in a Bird Talk magazine about a cockateil who survived 20 days outside before being found by a neighbor

Good Luck!!!

Very slim chance that he'll be back, if it's been a week now, it's likely he has moved on.
How come he was able to get free?
