He's a really nice dog, never aggressive. It's actually good excercise for him.

That's been brought up over the years and different people have different opinions about it. I don't find its bad at all. You can play tug-a-war with his TOYS only. I don't suggest giving him a sock since he'll think that all socks are play-able! Try a dog toy , you can get one at any walmart/kmart any store really. However, the most important thing to remember is that YOU always have to START and END the game. You can't let him take it at the end since he'll start to think that you aren't in control. If you do this, you'll dog will always know you're the one in charge and no harm will be done.

It is a game of domination. If you always win, and you always instigate the game and you always play the games on your terms not on the dog's terms then it's fine. BUT, if you allow this to be on the dog's terms and the dog wins, then the dog becomes more dominant.
The fact is, tugging is great at building a dog's confidence and making them more assertive and can build aggression if not properly channelled.
Tugging does have it's place and i use it with my own dogs to build drive and confidence but they are not pit bulls.
I would either play the game on my terms or not at all.
The problem comes with owners who have no clue and do not know how to deal with a strong breed.

Pandora is wrong. Human agression is definately NOT a trait of the breed. Its actually the opposite. Human agression was actually bred OUT of the breed.

I play tug-o-war with my pit all the time and she has never been agressive with anyone. Your dog should be fine. I've even seen pit bull websites that recommend tug ropes as a toy.

You should never play tug-a-war with any dog under 2yrs, as this does teach them aggression! Some breeds should never be allowed to play this game as it may be in the breeds nature to be aggressive already. This is an aggressive behaviour in the dog world. If, however, you do find yourself in a game of tug-a-war with your dog, make sure you ALWAYS win... this keeps you head of the pack in his/her mind.

Taking your dog for a walk or a game of fetch is much better exercise!

no thats not true, pit bulls are only mean if you raise them to be. you do have to be a little more aggressive with them when you're disciplining them but playing with a dog will not make them mean. i played tug of war with my pit all the time and she was the biggest baby i've ever met!! its all in the way you treat them.

Thats the stupidest thing I've ever heard! No wait...I've been told "Pit Bulls" are blood thirsty beast...THATS the stupidest thing I've heard in my life. No, this will NOT cause agression. It can possibly cause play nipping that could be a problem but the dogs not going to grow up and rip out your throat as long as you train it properly no matter what the news says. You're right, it is good excercise for him. My dogs love going outside with their rope and having me toss it, them bring it back, then we play a bit of tug-o-war before I retoss it. My old Lab/Pittie mix didn't ever want to play with anything but her tug rope and I introduced the game to her at 10 weeks old.

Oy. Dog Whisperer is an awful source for dog trainning. That man makes me sick. He's been charged for animal cruelty before too though I hated him before the charges. Anyone who holds a Chihuahuas head down because it's growling at them to "show domenince" needs to be shot.

When I play tug of war with my dog I never let the game end as him being the winner. I always get the rope away from him, winning the game then I set the rope down.

It can unless you train them properly and never let him get out of control. He should be in the heat of tug growling and with a simple slight suggestion drop it. Never while playing tug hit their face or try to make it an aggressive game. But just tug and he understands his leave it or drop it commands can be good training to listen to you.

It's a great way to teach your dog how to retrieve! Play a little tug-o-war have him "release" and throw the rope, he gets it sits and gives you the rope and you start over. Don't stop interacting with your dog, because of others beliefs. As long as what your doing is being used as exercise and obedience tools don't stop.
