If you want a bigger dog, a Golden Retriever is ideal. This dog grow to a bigger size, it all depends on the parents and breeder. So either get a full grown dog or get a pup if you can see the parents. Usually though, they are medium-sized (50-70 pounds). These are great dogs - they get along well with other dogs and with all people. Do not expect this to be a great watch dog, but it does have a great bark and can be protective. Of course, it needs proper training, but it won't need tons of exercise. Walks are good as is a romp in a dog park. Hope this helps!

Most medium sized dogs are hyper.
A semi medium dog you could try is a standard wire or long hair dachshund. They tend to be very mellow and are in the weight range of 16-30lbs
Any kind of hunting dog or herding you will want to avoid as they are extremely hyper most of the time and don't calm and mature until 2-3years.. if ever. And hunting and herding breeds usually cover about all the medium sized dogs unfortunately *laugh*

A retired racing greyhound, they are huge couch potatoes, 4 20 minute leash walks is enough to meet their potty and exercise needs. Most people think because they race that means they are hyper nothing is farther from the truth, they are sprinters meaning they can run super fast but only for very short distance and then like the cheetah must sleep and rest to regain strength before another sprint, on the track a race is 30 seconds long, and they can only be raced at most every 3 days, which means they only race 1 minute out of a week, then are rested in crates for rest of the week except for turnouts to go potty and get fresh air.
An here is my greyhound girl playing with my 26 lb eskie and 12 lb chinese crested http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/mleg2001/the%20gang/P1010001b-1.jpg

I have an 8 month old Irish setter and he does need alot of exercise. I walk him every morning and night and also play with him at night for about an hour and that might just get him winded.

You do not want toget any breed that wants to hunt, being hunters and full of energ, they would be terrible in an aprtment. Go for another mixed breed or a small dog, don't know what kind of dogs you like, but a small dog or another mixed breed would be your best bet.

First, I would get a male - easier for your current female to deal with. As for breed - are you looking for intelligent? Any coat requirements? Irish Setters are not the easiest breed to live comfortably with - coat care and often a more challenging breed to work with in the home. Perhaps an Australian Shepherd would be an easier choice. Smart, fun (look at the parents - there ARE mellow Aussies out there) and easy.

I've had a couple of basset hounds and they tend to be really relaxed, but its might be more the dog than the breed. Golden retrievers are pretty energetic dogs I wouldn't suggest them. They are a wonderful dog though I currently have 2.

Go to your local animal shelter and pick another mixed breed about the same size. The animal shelter located near me actually asks you to bring your dog in so you can see if the two of them are compatible.
