Her birthstone, as long as it isn't diamond.

I commend you for not being sucked in by DeBeers brainwashing.

You can have whatever kind of stone you want. One of my close friends has an amethyst since purple is her favorite color. All that matters is the girl loves the ring. My ring is a filigree style, copied from a ring from the 1930's, it's nothing like what people consider to be the traditional engaement ring, but I love it and could not have picked out a ring I would love more. Choose a ring you know she would love, diamond or no diamond. Any stone will due.

A sapphire symbolizes lifelong love, but unless your intended says she would prefer someting other than diamonds, I would just stick with the traditional. In all honesty, if I got a ring of a stone other than diamond for an engagement ring, I would have been sorely disappointed. I suppose that makes me sound terrible, but I am a traditional type, and I just don't like the idea of a gem other than diamond for an engagement ring.

Trust me - Ask your fiance for her opinion!
I'm a girl that would love a non-diamond engagement ring but there are other girls that might not like it.
It really depends upon her tastes.

I am a fan of Tanzanite.
Other good options are Emerald, Ruby, Saphire.

Here's an idea - go to a jewelry store and select a few different rings that you like then bring your fiance to choose from those - it also helps ensure it is in your price range.

Well that depends on your girl. What's her favorite color? Will she care if there's no diamond? And most importantly, what are you willing to spend?
I know my engagement ring has sapphires next to the diamond because my favorite color is blue. Gemstones are plentiful and come in all colors. But high quality gemstones can be much more expensive than diamonds depending on the stone, the size and the color. Do a little research on the internet and you'll be surprised. Fire opals are a beautiful red, Tourmaline is normally vibrant green or yellow and sapphires range from blue to pink to black.

I have to tell you my husband and I have been married for 16yrs and we did not have a lot of money so we first agreed on a pretty plain wedding band set . then after we had been together and saved up some money (1yr and 3-4 months ) we both agreed it was time to look for a real wedding set he actually let me look at whatever i wanted but it was love at first sight when I came across a cubic zirconia set . it cost about $110.and I still have it on my finger today . the thing about cubic zirconia is that it is still a diamond but it is simulated and sold by weight not size if you look around very carefully you can find a nice set . but I will tell you to be carefull because some cubic sets are made rather cheaply and it shows but there are some like mine out there that are still beautifull and will beat the shine of a diamond anyday . I know mine does and I get compliments on it all the time . but you should look around and you probably want to susprise your fiance but a good piece of advicce take her with you she might be able to give you some ideals on what she likes . if that is not possible take a friend ,sister ,brother or some one who knows what she likes color and cut wise hope this helps

This is a personal thing, are you sure that your fiance doesn't want a diamond? My engagement ring is a round cut, tiffany set, purple sapphire and it's gorgeous. Most girls want the diamond. I don't recommend tanzanite or emeralds. Tanzanites fade in sunlight and emeralds can shatter if struck just right. Birthstones make a nice engagement ring.

there is NO ALTERNATIVE!! ask a majority of women and they will always want a diamond~ let us hope that your future bride is an april baby because...that IS THE BITHSTONE OF AN APRIL BABY!! and someone mentioned a birthstone....
why are you asking? does your bride not like diamonds or is it that you do not want to buy a diamond for her? please do not take my comment or question as a rude one ...i mean do not be offended~ Oh you know what sounds pretty though....
Princess Diana's wedding ring was 1 big sapphire in the middle and tons of diamonds surrounding it and it was quite lovely! I am a sept baby and that is my birthstone~ Oh rubys or emerals with diamonds look nice too...but just remember a diamond is forever! congrats on your engagement!! have a great week!

Anything you want. Many brides have Tahitian black pearls, garnets, sapphires, and a myriad of other gemstones.

I would be very disappointed if I received a diamond. Not only do I hate them because of how they are mined, but to me, they're very plain and not that pretty compared to other gems. But I wouldn't refuse the engagement if that's what I was given.

I think a ruby would be a good idea, you could also with it black hills gold if you find the right designs, Cabela's has really nice black hills gold rings that they sell in sets with necklaces, my hubby got my first ring from there, then my engagment ring was a 1ct. diamond, and then my wedding ring is a sinple band.

ummmm - get her opinion on this first. Say something along the lines of "Dan at work just bought his girlfriend a beautiful ruby engagement ring, it's really different and unique looking" - and see how she responds about how she would feel about not getting a diamond.

Then if it is positive go for a pretty stone
